REJOICE AND RENEW: A REPORT
From Rebecca Rocco and Lou Keim,
Co-chairs, Rejoice and Renew: St. Malachi Looks to the Future
The Planning Team spent many hours preparing for the three listening sessions
(Sept. 10, 27 and Oct. 14) and in processing the interviews afterwards. From summaries of the interviews, we created a summary of each key topic. All of these have been distributed to Community of St. Malachi and St. Malachi Parish council members. As a committee, we considered the draft of the directional statements which will be presented to the councils in their special joint meeting Sunday, Jan. 21. The next stages will be creation of an action plan for the future, and its implementation.
This has represented a real commitment to the community and the parish, and to their futures.
A "thank you" to the some 200 people who participated in the listening sessions and to the
following Planning Team members who have been involved in some or all of this process
from January 2000 to January 2001:
Dan Alaimo * Steve DeJohn * Cindy DiNardo * Pat Forkas * Marge Gibbons
Jocelyn Heaney * Rose Horning * Cathy LaBianca Johnson * Tom Kastelic
Fred Leonard * Gary Pritts * Stephanie Pritts * Sue Daley Schaeffer
Ann Speier * Fr. Tony Schuerger
Our appreciation, too, to Rick Krivanka, director of the Diocesan Pastoral Planning Office,
who facilitated the process here at St. Malachi. - RR and LK, Co-chairs.

Let's all Welcome - MARTIN SKLADANY
He's the young seminarian intern who'll be with us for two months, part of his nine-month stay in this country arranged by the Benedictines of St. Andrew Abbey. He's from the Diocese of Spis in Slovakia, from a village with a population of only several hundred,
Martincek. His parents are
Frantisek and Emilia Skladany, and he has a younger sister, Jane. (By the way, Martin certainly needn't apologize - as he does -- for his limited English. He's been studying it for just a couple of months at the abbey, and doing very well. Doubt if many of us would do as well in Slovakian. With one exception, of course. And before he points it out. Hritz is a Slovak name...)

For a good start this New Year, here's a look at some of Last Year's Good Deeds :
The Community of St. Malachi has received the following appreciative acknowledgements:
- From Aggie Hoskin and John Gellhausen, executive director and board president, respectively, of
the West Side Catholic Shelter, for our gift (shared with St. Malachi Parish) of more than $6377
toward their renovation and expansion campaign, "Let us Build a House Where Love Can
Dwell." (This amount wonderfully exceeded our $4500 pledge.)
- From Fr. Donald Cozzens, president-rector of St. Mary Seminary, for our gift of $250 "in support of ministry formation in the Diocese of Cleveland in honor of Fr. Paul Hritz."
- From Christine Schenk CSJ, executive director of FutureChurch, for our contribution of $750 to
"our mission of working for an inclusive Catholicism with at least weekly availability of the Eucharist..."
- From Margaret B. Roche, executive director of Stella Maris, for our donation of $200 to "help continue to develop and provide the finest medical, emotional and spiritual care for men and women seeking recovery from addiction."
- From Sr. Maureen Doyle, director, Urban Community School, for our donation of $2500 to "help UCS maintain its program of quality education for inner-city students. Nearly 75% come from families who struggle daily with poverty and its consequences."

INTERFAITH ENLIGHTENMENT AND EXCHANGE
Two Opportunities
- The CSM Spiritual Development Committee will sponsor a six-week series on spiritualities of major Eastern religious traditions - Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist and Islamic - from 7 to 9 p.m. Sundays, in the school library, beginning Feb. 4. (Tentative dates are the four February Sundays and March 4 and 18.
According to series facilitator, Mike Petit, Session One will be an intro to religions, a discussion of why study other traditions, and the Catholic Church's position on interreligious dialog. Session Two will look at the Hindu tradition: how to understand the millions of gods and concepts like karma and reincarnatation; a look at yoga practices and the great scripture, the Bhagavad Gita. Sessions Three and Four will treat the Buddhist tradition: a look at the life of the Buddha, the Four Noble Truths, nirvana, and the question of religion without a god. The practice of meditation will be the focus as well as some Tibetan practices. Session Five will look at the Taoist philosophy: the Tao, the concept of yin and yang, the Tao Te Ching and discuss a contemporary expression in eco-feminist writers, especially Sallie McFague, whose book "Super, Natural Christians." explains how she believes Christians should regard nature. The last session will look at Islam: discuss the usual misunderstandings and look at the Sufi tradition, especially the Whirling Dervish tradition of the great poet Rumi. A Message from Bill McLaughlin:
"A supplemental CSM roster will be available at the membership table during the coffee hour. This will have all additions and changes since the initial distribution."
A Message from Kathy and Mike Petit has come acknowledging grateful appreciation for CSM support and sympathy upon the death of their daughter, Carrie
Kornelakis.
A Message from the Editor:
This is for both those who attended the fine concert given in our church Jan. 9 by the Fordham University Choir, and for those who missed out on a splendid program. It was not announced, so few of us knew that the young woman chosen to greet the audience, Francine Davis, a Fordham junior and the only Greater Clevelander in the 30-member group, was truly on home ground during this winter tour. She is a St. Malachi Center alumna, according to center director Cathy Saegel, and was well mentored in educational choices by Sr. Michael Marie Griffin. So Cathy saw to it that a number of the center's current teens were on hand for the classical program and to meet their own concert star. Everyone connected with the center should be proud! - M. Englert
