A Message from Susan Shipley, CSM Social Action Chair: West Side Catholic Center Summer Pledge Drive – June 10-11 Sponsored by Community of St. Malachi and St. Malachi Parish "Earlier this year, a group from the parish and community met with Aggie Hoskin, executive director of the West Side Catholic Center. She talked about WSCC history, mission, current status and future goals. Twenty-eight years ago the Central West Deanery parishes decided to create the WSCC. Its mission was to serve the area’s homeless, hungry and poor. One of the churches involved was St. Malachi. Our legacy lives on today at the center as 100 women and children are sheltered and 74,000 meals are served every year. "In listening to Aggie, one is impressed that the Holy Spirit has had a hand in the WSCC evolution. The need to expand services to the poor is greater than ever. With their needs and problems on her mind, one day Aggie looked up to find an adjacent building for sale. And that building was reasonably priced. The building will be the new women’s and children’s shelter. Doubling capacity and expanding existing services, it is scheduled to be opened this year. The WSCC began an expansion drive to meet the challenge of retrofitting and updating the building to meet today’s needs, and now they need our help. "The St. Malachi Community and Parish collaborative pledge drive will help with the expansion. Aggie Hoskin will speak at our Masses June 10 and 11 and flyers will be distributed by council members and volunteers. Our combined pledge goal is $4500." – S.S. A Message from Casey Stangel: "MILLION MOM MARCH – I WAS THERE…"Okay, all you who support sensible gun control laws, stand against that wall. And all of you opposed, stand along that wall. If only it could be that simple. I know what wall I was standing along on Mothers’ Day last Sunday. I was standing with 750,000 people in the Capitol Mall area in Washington, D.C. Group after group marched with their state. There were many speakers: the well-spoken surviving teenager from Littleton; the eloquent mother of a student killed at Littleton; Marian Wright Edelman, a black mom with a wonderful singing voice as well as a story to tell; a broken-hearted Native American mom; the widow of a police officer killed on duty. "The speakers were moving, dynamic, soul-searching, forgiving, hurting. I saw shoes of kids who have been killed by gunfire – their actual shoes. I get teary eyed just remembering. I saw thousands of photographs, signs, quilts honoring dead family members killed by guns. I saw no political anything on behalf of George W.’s campaign. I saw Gore signs and stickers. I saw hundreds of thousands of people mourning their loss of a loved one, but in celebration. I was exhilarated and humbled. "The Million Mom March is calling on Congress to enact common sense gun control legislation that includes 1) sensible ‘cooling off’ periods and background checks; 2) licensing handgun owners and registering all handguns; 3) safety locks for all handguns; 4) limiting purchases to one-handgun-per-month, and 5) no-nonsense enforcement of gun laws. I have Million Mom March bumper stickers that remind people, ' I Vote.’ These will be available at Coffee Hour. Please consider taking one. Barb Parkowski also has them. The MMM can make a difference; in Congress we must make a difference." - - - Casey Stangel, 440-234-8766 CSM SYMPATHY AND PRAYERS HEALTH DEPARTMENT - please keep in your prayers Herman Strnisha, Mary Beth Gibbons, (In response to a number of requests, here is how to reach Bea Donofrio with get-well greetings and CSM CONGRATULATIONS –
