The Community of St Malachi - First personal Parish of the Diocese of Cleveland

Celebrating 25 Years ot Faith in God and in the Future!

2nd Sunday of Advent December 5, 1999

Lucille "Lou" Schroeder R.I.P.

All of St. Malachi is saddened and offers our condolences to the Schroeder family at the death of Lucille ("Lou") Schroeder, who died at Malachi House Wednesday evening and was buried from St. Malachi on Saturday morning. For more than 20 years -- until this time last year -- Lou served at St. Malachi, in neighborhood ministry, in the office for many years and in a host of other ways, great & small. As she wrote in this Newsletter a few months ago, My time at -- and with -- the Community of St. Malachi and St. Malachi Parish was rooted in a faith-based wish to be of service. Sort of a minister to the ministers. As Matthew’s Gospel says, Well done good & faithful servant! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you" (Mt. 25:34) May she rest in peace.

A Message from Marty:

"As those of you who attended the Oct. 24 Community of St. Malachi Liturgy know, there was quite a commotion, and not the usual commotion from infants being baptized. After the Litany of the Saints, I looked over at my mother and realized that she was no longer with us. She was pale, her eyes were wide open and she was not responding to my touch or gentle calls.

"I went into a panic. One CSM member said to lay her in the aisle and let her breathe. Several members called 9-1-1. I thought she’d either had a stroke or heart attack or something fatal. Nurses, doctors and other caring CSM members surrounded me, but it seemed like an eternity until the ambulance came. Dr. John Gerace offered to come to the hospital with us; I told him I was sure Mom was in good medical hands but that I would surely appreciate it.

"I had not met John before this, but I was grateful to have a CSM member with me and especially grateful knowing that the rest of you were with us in prayer.

"At St. Vincent Charity Hospital Mom was monitored for over an hour but not given any medical treatment. It seemed to me that either nothing could be done or that none knew what to do. Then, just as suddenly as she went away, her color returned and she woke up. When I asked how she felt, she said, ‘Rested.’ The second thing she did was apologize for causing a disturbance. There was no apparent damage or lingering effects. She stayed in the hospital overnight for observation. Stroke and heart attack were ruled out and other tests were made. Today she is doing fine.

The doctors at Charity and her own doctor cannot medically explain what happened. My sisters, who are nurses, can’t either. But our whole family is content with a simple answer. We thank God. We thank the Community of St. Malachi for their prayers and loving support. And we ask for your continued prayers in thanksgiving." Marty Miller and the Family of Robert C. Miller.

(Ed. Note: I think a good many CSM members were gripped by the paradox that morning. There, right in our midst, three babies were joining our faith world and another human being possibly was leaving it. Simultaneously and right before our eyes. As Fr. Jim O’Donnell concluded the ritual and the newly baptized were carried back into the assembly, the paramedics were wheeling Mrs. Miller down the same center aisle. The reverential silence was almost palpable. It was an Alpha/Omega moment. It was truly a ‘Malachi Moment.’ And by the way, many CSM members have expressed appreciation for the consideration and respect displayed by the EMS people in their quiet efficiency that Sunday. As ever, God bless ‘em all. Mary Englert
