The Community of
St. Malachi Newsletter
The Community of St. Malachi First Personal Parish of the Diocese
of Cleveland
Celebrating 25 Years of Faith in God and in the Future!
29th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 17, 1999
A "HEARTY GREETING!"
Thats one of Websters definitions for "welcome."
And thats what the
Community of St. Malachi extends to
Chris Weber,
who will be spending his seminary internship here with us until next
spring.
A graduate of Ashland College, with a degree in education, Chris has
been a teacher, for two years each, at St. James elementary school and Trinity and Padua Franciscan high
schools. Hes now in his third year at St. Mary Seminary studying toward MA and MDiv degrees. And for the
priesthood, of course.
Chris grew up in St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, but his "home
parish" in this area is Clevelands Immaculate Conception. He is the son of Richard
and Rosemarie Weber , has a sister Laurie, brothers Tim and Phil,
and is the proud uncle of two nieces and two nephews: Emily, Sara,
Justin and Jack.
Lets hope hell add our CSM to his list of "home"
parishes.

OUR CSM FRIENDSHIP-BUILDING BRUNCH
following our 11 oclock Liturgy next Sunday, Oct. 24
Planned by the Spiritual Development Committee, the brunch, in
the hall, will provide opportunity for older and newer CSM members to get to know one
another better, to further develop "community."
Joining us will be Fr. Jim ODonnell. At the same time, our Christian
Formation Committee will coordinate a pizza luncheon party in the center for the children. And
our Membership Committee
will join in the brunch as the second session of its Fall Welcome Series
for new members.
Planners expect the event to take about an hour. For further
information, call the Spiritual Development co-chairs, Frank Schiros (216-521-4195) or Dick Gibbons (330-716-9624).
After the brunch, Fall Welcome Series participants will move over to the center
until about 2:30 p.m. That series will begin this coming Tuesday, Oct. 19, then conclude
Tuesday, Oct. 26, with 7:30-9:30 p.m. sessions at Kay Vines house, 17809

Melica, who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary here at St.
Malachi - Also to the much more recently wed CSM members Frank Bird and Debra Nara (Sept.

here: LuAnn and Kevins wedding Mass booklet contained a brief history of St. Malachi
church, parish and community, with the concluding notation: "They met here, at St.
Malachis Church, during a welcome meeting for the Community, three years ago this
month.") See, all sorts of good things happen here at Detroit Avenue and West 25th

A Message from CSM member Louis Finucane,
a native of Ireland and recently naturalized U.S. citizen:
A Memorial to the Great Famine
"They are poor. About all are hungry. Most are homeless. Many have
been evicted. Lost souls wandering the roads.
Their government believes they should care for themselves, and does
little. They pawn what few possessions they might have.
They dream of a better future for their children.
They were the Irish of 1845-1850, time of Gorta Mor, the Great Hunger.
Millions died. Millions more came to America, many to Cleveland,
settling here near St. Malachi: in the Angle,
on Whiskey Island and at Irishtown Bend on the Cuyahoga River.
My friend, Pat Cooney, God rest his soul, used to say: "To
have any idea where it is you are going, you best never forget where it is that you came
from."
The Committee for the Cleveland Memorial to the Great Hunger, to which I
belong, has been working now for two years on securing an appropriate site and fitting
design for a monument to permanently memorialize those Irish ancestors who settled in
Cleveland during this time 150 years ago. Appropriately, the site is to be located not far
from St. Malachi, on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. This lasting granite Celtic
Cross monument will be a fitting tribute to their faith and tenacity, and a steady
reminder of their roots for generations to come.
We now need your support to fund the memorial. A dinner is to be held at
4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the West Side Irish American Club in Olmsted Township. The
program will include a presentation by the Irish American Archives Society.
The donation per plate is $100. We would like to put together a table or
two from St. Malachi, Please call
Louis Finucane (216-939-9990) or Bill McLaughlin (440-234-6362).
Thank you." LF

Just a thought
Preparation of this newsletter was interrupted by Wednesdays
storms and its contents trapped for about 16 hours inside the computer (that Monster in My
Kitchen) rendered dormant by electric power failure.
Just another reminder of how dependent we are upon such
taken-for-granted basics as Mr. Edisons legacy, and how very dreadful it must be for
the countless people, worldwide, totally without it because of natural catastrophe or poverty. God help them! - Mary Englert
