THE COMMUNITY OF SAINT MALACHI

At a dinner meeting held Monday 8-30-71, with Father Roth, Tony DiNardo, Joe Mohar and Ed Eliason present, the following areas were discussed.
1. An over view recapping the Information Sheet data. (ie. The number committed, not committed, number of children etc.).
2. Organizational progress to date;
Council concept of shared responsibility, with Committees for LITURGY, FINANCE, SOCIAL ACTION, ADMINISTRATION ETC.
2A. In the area of Liturgy, Father Roth stated that the present
11 AM Sunday Liturgy is just about right, the way it is, for the people attending. It was explained by Tony that at present the laymen are not assuming their share of the responsibility in preparing the Liturgy; everything was falling on Father Hritz. It was further explained that the Liturgy Committee has been in contact with Father Hritz and is in the process of defining the areas of lay involvement.  Tony covered the need for the Liturgy Committee to plan childrens Liturgies, and to obtain information on the Rites for Baptism, Marriage,and Funerals. Father Roth stated that, although Bishop Cosgrove had indicated, in a phone conversation, that the Sacraments could be taken care of, no clearly defined way was discussed.
2B. In the area of Social Action, Father Roth stated that the major concern of the Community should be the FORMATION OF ITS MEMBERS -- for involvement in their own environments. Other than some visitation of the elderly, he felt that the situations in the area were highly specialized and that involvement would not be understood or welcomed by the predominantly Black residents (63-67%).
2C. The area of finance was developed in depth by Father Roth. He saw finance as the key to the implementation of any programs the Community may develop. He suggested that a separate bank account be established for "THE COMMUNITY OF SAINT MALACHI". This account would be funded by contributions designated specifically for the COMMUNITY OF SAINT MALACHI.
The recording of contributions by individual and the administration of the account would be the responsibility of the COMMUNITY.  The present level of contributions from the 11 AM Sunday Liturgy ranges from $ 225 to $275. Father Roth would need this level of income to meet todays expenses. Should the expenses increase due to additional use of the St. Malachi facilities by the COMMUNITY, he would have to ask the COMMUNITY for additional support. Father Roth also offered ideas for the initial appeal for finances to establish the bank account and to begin the operation of an office he has set aside for the COMMUNITY in the rectory. Other sources of revenue are the monthly raffle and the Sunday coffee hour. Father suggested that the availability of raffle tickets to the COMMUNITY could help to defray any expenses incurred due to additional use of the facilities (i.e. heat, light, custodian). The coffee hour could be taken over by the COMMUNITY as a form of Social Action; with the proceeds being turned over to Father Roth to satisfy his expenses.
In the area of formal registration in the COMMUNITY, Father Roth suggested that the COMMUNITY design and establish its own REGISTRATION RECORD, geared to the information requirements of the COMMUNITY. To satisfy registration Father suggested establishing and announcing Sunday morning office hours for COMMUNITY business.
In summary, a positive atmosphere prevailed, with
Father Roth providing pastoral guidance and direction. The meeting concluded with the understanding that all planning, communications, financing and implementation of programs, in the areas discussed, is the responsibility of "THE COMMUNITY OF SAINT MALACHI".
