Council Meeting Highlights

From the January 13, 2002 issue of Communio

(The meeting was convened at 7:00 p.m. in the School Hall on December 2nd.  Paul Wingenfeld opened the meeting with faith sharing.)

Pastor’s Report: The pastor reminded us to continue praying for RCIA journey of faith participants. He noted that the enrollment of unbaptized persons as well as welcoming of those baptized and now desiring full communion with the Catholic Church has just taken place. Fr. Tony said that Malachi House has completed and moved into the new addition of its building. The original section of the house is undergoing renovation. They hope to complete the work and be fully operational by late May or early June.

St. Malachi Looks to the Future: Rejoice and Renew: Activities Completed: Established an Outreach Coordinator. Activities Underway: Collaboration with Parish to consider development of a picture directory, investigating ways to streamline the recommitment process, outreach to new members, mentoring. Activities Planned: prospective member cards; support Hospitality committee to place greeters at Coffee Hour; inviting a wider range of membership participation; development of a plan to reach out for new, more diverse members; Name Tag Sunday; encourage support of Malachi Ministries. Still needed is approval for development of the "Picture Directory."

Liturgy Committee: Jeanette Shemo of the Liturgy Committee reviewed this year’s events. She noted that the bereavement workshop was a success and will become an annual event, and that baptismal garments are being made for each child. A Mass of Remembrance and subsequent reception to honor all those who passed away this past year was held on All Souls Day, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Over 75 people were in attendance. Since this was very successful, we plan to make this an annual event. An Evening of Remembrance is in the planning for liturgical ministers. The Eucharistic prayer is in the process of review and the wedding brochure is being revised. Pam Pulizzi has volunteered to co–chair the CSM Liturgy Committee with Jeanette Shemo.
Leadership Development: Rosemarie DeJohn spoke on leadership development, and said that a leadership development event is being planned for Jan. 26 and April 13th or 27th.

Spiritual Development: Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 starts Vocation Awareness Week (Jan. 13-19). All are encouraged to discuss vocation opportunities with their families.

New cardinals' impact on the future of the church? Theological and political issues around celibate, male priesthood. Profound issues of the role of women in the church Should CSM take a formal stance on these issues? Suggesting other parishes do likewise? Pastoral ministers in paid positions increase effectiveness? Council Meeting Highlights

From the April 8

The Community Council met on March 4 at St. Malachi Center. Council President Gary Pritts opened with prayer and personal faith sharing. Marc Giguere nominated by Gary and elected by Council to fill the vacant at-large seat through June 2001. Vacancy was created when Fred Leonard became co-chair of the Social Action Committee.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: To implement the St. Malachi Looks to the Future vision, establishing a leadership development program to nurture the latent leadership abilities of our membership. Tom Amon and Rebecca Rocco have volunteered to spearhead this effort. Other volunteers are welcome. Diocesan resources are also available. Being congruent with mission of St. Malachi Center, will discuss with Cathy Saegel. Possibly connect with other parish councils.

BISHOP'S LETTER: Bishop Pilla's is seeking insights and suggestions for practical ways to undertake his initiative as spelled out in the pastoral letter, "Vibrant Parish Life." There are only 37 priests in diocese under 40 years of age, yet 237 parishes. At the average 4.5 ordinations per year, it would take 50 years to restaff the diocese. CSM has unusual insight to "parish cooperation" and therefore much to offer. Councilors to review, reflect, provide ideas for written response to the Bishop by May 31.

PASTOR'S REPORT: Project AFFORD: Organized through St. Pat's to provide affordable housing on Near West Side. CSM sponsored a house to recognize Fr. Paul Hritz's retirement and Fr. Jim O'Donnell's 40th anniversary of ordination. Slow acquiring the lot, permits; now built, to be dedicated March 23. The Diocese is looking for support for Sudanese refugees through Migration and Refugee Services.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION: High school students getting ready to perform "Godspell" on April 29. High school retreat is April 6-8, will return to 11 a.m. Mass with the Community.

COMMUNICATIONS: Draft of E-Communications Policy recommendation was presented and then tabled for the next meeting. Began process of leadership authorizing or declining listing of their phones or email address on the CSM web site. Council approved Kay Vine for a second two-year term as Archivist, effective 3/1/01.

MEMBERSHIP: Paul Wingenfeld will chair next year with Francine Cutura, subject to ratification at the Annual Meeting.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Fred Leonard and Angelo Privitera seeking three at-large candidates. Also seeking chairs for Hospitality and Spiritual Development.

ANNUAL MEETING: Scheduled for April 22. Meal like the Sunday Brunch for People who are Homeless. Trying to involve teens in serving and clean up. Cooks lined up. Will coordinate with Parish Coffee Hour following 9:30 a.m. Mass.

HOSPITALITY: Introductions before Mass: Making progress; coming-to-quiet still needs continued emphasis. Suggest asking the guest to Coffee after Mass. Recommend leadership wear their nametags.

FRANK SCHIROS' RECOMMENDATIONS: Reports from the study groups did not include many specific recommendations. Some changes are being reviewed by St. Malachi Looks to the Future. Continuing discussion, but no further Council action anticipated.

Council Meeting Highlights

From the March 11

The Community Council met in St. Malachi Center on Feb. 6. Fred Leonard opened the meeting by sharing a prayer by Mother Theresa. The minutes of the joint meeting with the St. Malachi Parish Council on Jan. 21 were approved.

ANNUAL MEETING: Date was discussed, but decision was deferred (and subsequently set for April 22). Search committee for at--large member candidates: Fred Leonard, Gary Pritts, Rosemary Gray and Angelo Privitera. Meeting committee: Bill McLaughlin and Peter Toomey.

PASTOR'S REPORT: Fr. Tony reports a contact from Bill Hahn of the "From Thy Bounty" outreach to homeless that don't participate in meal programs or go to established centers. Outreach to the homeless is being discussed as part of the "St. Malachi Looks to the Future" planning process and a "Church in the City" planning grant is being applied for. West Side Ecumenical Ministry is conducting a capital campaign to build the Reinberger Auditorium to house the Cleveland Children's Theater and a community fitness center.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Dick Gibbons has resigned as chair of the Spiritual Development Committee. A replacement is being sought. Also, at--large member Fred Leonard has become co--chair of the Social Action Committee and a replacement at--large councilor is needed.

ST. MALACHI FUTURE: Council formally approved the directional statements put forward by the "Rejoice and Renew -- St. Malachi Looks to the Future" appreciative inquiry project. Council agreed to form ad hoc committees with Parish to suggest structural changes as deemed appropriate in time for the May council meeting. Committees to include: Journeying Side by Side - Parish and Community, Liturgy, Hospitality, Reaching Out and Sharing the Gift, Spiritual Growth. Question raised about how gentrification of neighborhood affects future planning.

MEMBERSHIP: Effort is underway to contact Community members who joined since 1998 for follow--up and to put in place a system to get new members in touch with committees and ministries that they expressed an interest in. Results from survey of people joining after 1998: mostly favorable response; appreciated the contact. Very few had ever been contacted regarding the interests they'd identified during Recommitment. Suggestions to wear nametags. More social activities, especially for families with young children. Membership Committee will evaluate the best solution to communicating names of interested members, including electronic lists. Eight people came to the January prospective member meeting on Jan. 7. Rose Horning will coordinate the Spring Welcome Series. The annual recommitment process will begin during Lent.

HOSPITALITY: Council members urged to wear their nametags and say hello to at least one person after Mass. Discussion of the invitation to introduction to people at beginning of Mass. Many people have asked to resume. Fr. Tony said it was stopped because it is a disruption. Long discussion of need and value of a formal invitation.

SOCIAL ACTION: Committee has been supporting the West Side Catholic Center's Furnish--A--Room project, and received $1635 which has been given to the Center. However, committee reported that it received complaints that some unidentified Community members objected to this. Fred Leonard will now co--chair committee with Lois Dingman and continue next year.

COMMUNICATIONS: Committee is seeking an "E--Mail Shepherd" for Community to coordinate all E--mail efforts, including the formation of combination E--mail and phone wheel to notify members about emergencies.

ANNIVERSARY: Final report of the year's activities. Recommendations reviewed. The large Anniversary Candle will burn during membership months and other special events. Council commended Kay Vine and the entire Steering Committee.

NEW BUSINESS: Council was advised of a Newsweek article about Fr. Paul Hritz and Malachi House. Council voted to donate $1000 to the El Salvador relief effort. West Side Ecumenical Ministry is seeking a $500 donation from the Community; action deferred to May funding request procedure. Urban Community School project is on hold pending the selection of an architect for feasibility study.
