Greetings and peace!  We wanted to let you know about our free online Lenten retreat beginning this week.  This 9 week series of daily readings and reflections was developed by former JRH director Fr. Clem Metzger, S.J. to help  us attend to our spirituality from the comforts of a home or office computer during the holy season of Lent.

Interim Pastoral Parish Council December Meeting Minutes

I.    Opening Prayer  – Mary Jane

Note:  Following prayer, Lou gave a brief overview of how our role has now changed from being the Our New Parish Team to the Interim Council.

II.    Elements of an Effective Parish Council Meeting – from a guide by Dave DeLambo that will be using in our meetings as direction:

Note:  Need to identify in by-laws how we will make decisions (e.g. Roberts rules of order, consensus)

III.    Learning & Enrichment
•    Conference in Rome  –  Fr. Tony shared a handout, photo and some of the experiences and outcomes from his trip.

IV.    Decision
•    Pastoral Council Guidelines – Kevin reported that they have about 2/3 of Guidelines completed (reflected in October 2009 report for town hall meeting).  Plan is for small group (Matt, Kevin and Fr. Tony) to complete a full draft of the Guidelines – then they will report it back to the Pastoral Council Working Group for feedback. See paper handout for timeline.  Discussion regarding timeframe – mentions to have ballots in April and election by end of May. Transition in June, new Council takes effect July 1. This is proposed and depending on when bylaws are completed.
•    Confirm Meeting Dates for Council Meetings  January 24, February 21, March 21, April 18, May 16.
•    Announcements at Liturgies – suggestion to have announcements at each Mass possibly done by member of IPC.  Charlene explained that liturgically, following the post Communion prayer is the appropriate time and when there is the best attendance (with the possible exception of 4:30 Mass).
Announcements should be sent to the rectory. Decision to have Fr. Tony write them, have various IPC members say them after Commuion prayer (except 4:30 before Mass).  Be sure to introduce self!!!
•    Youth ministry this summer – group coming from Germany for a week in August – consensus to go forward with this – support their visit here in Cleveland.

V.      Discussion
•    Evangelization Commission – part of our recommendation for the new Parish as well as part of the clustering plan and Diocesan recommendations.  Also a very important part of the Church.  Joe Nagel to be contact for Cluster.

•    Dave and Kate to also work with this.

VI.    Reports
•    Commission Reports – reminder to email them a couple days before the meeting whenever possible.  Thoughts about fundraising using sweatshirts and DVD.

VII.    Announcements
•    Info for Bulletin:  To Kim (office) by Monday
•    Recording Secretary – Pam to fill for interim period.  Minutes will be an insert in the weekly bulletin

VIII.    Meeting Summary – set dates form meeting, tentative guideline for Pastoral Council, begin development of Evangelization, hosting the group from Germany.

It’s not February yet…. Why should I think about my Lenten practice already????

While there are a few weeks before Lent, I hope you will consider registering for the retreat, Praying with St. Ignatius which starts next Sunday January 31st. “Praying with St. Ignatius is a Scripture-based retreat adapted from The Spiritual Exercises that deepens your spirituality and fosters a heartfelt knowledge of Jesus. For eight Sundays you will be guided through different methods of prayer, meditation, journaling, and small group sharing. You are asked to commit ½ hour a day for private prayer,” is the explanation on the flyer at the doors of the Church and on the website.

What the flyer does not disclose is that prayer, individual, in small groups, and in community, was something that Jesus did often as witnessed in Scripture (the words “Jesus” and “pray” appear at least 13 times in the New Testament). Would it not make sense to imitate the things we can, that the Son of God did while he was on earth. Jesus had the most intimate relationship with God; most likely prayer was a part of that intimacy.

What the flyer does not disclose is the rich experience others have enjoyed as a result of this committed time in prayer. Relationships with other persons take time and commitment. Why should relationship with God be any different? People I know who have experienced this retreat often return after a few years to encourage the consolation they had of prayer again.

Another thing the flyer does not disclose is that we are not the only people being invited to this retreat. Our neighbors who attend Churches in the Central West District are invited, our neighbors who live in the Riverview and Lakeview Hi-Rises and Lakeview Lo-Rises, our neighbors who use the services at Monday Night Meal, St. Malachi Center, Back Door Ministry, other services at St. Malachi Church, Sagrada Familia, St. Augustine’s, St. Patrick’s on Bridge, St. Colman’s, West Side Catholic Center, West Side Ecumenical Ministry, the Bishop Cosgrove Center, and Community Women’s Shelter have all been invited. This is an opportunity to pray with some of the people we provide food, showers, childcare, education, and other material necessities for.

Hopefully this is the start of a new tradition of deepening relationships with God and our neighbors on the near west side. Meeting the Historical Jesus Series

Meeting the Historical Jesus is Tuesday Jan. 19th and then, part 2 is Tuesday Feb. 16th. Join us to learn about and spend time with the Historical Jesus. Dr. Sheila McGinn, professor at John Carroll University, is the presenter. There is a pot luck dinner at 6pm in St. Malachi Hall. Please bring side dishes and dessert as sandwiches and beverages are provided. Dr. McGinn will start her talk at 7:00pm, after which there is time for small group reflection. A few questions you may want to consider for reflection even before Tuesday include:

•    What are five images of Jesus in the New Testament that you find yourself returning to again and again in prayer and reflection?

•    What are five incidents or events in the life of Jesus presented in the NT that you find yourself returning to again and again in prayer and reflection?

•    What are five sayings of Jesus in the NT that you find yourself returning to again and again?

•    What are five parables of Jesus in the NT which you would consider as your “favorites?”

Following months of hard work and dedication by over 100 volunteers, the new St. Malachi Parish opened its doors to the members so grateful that their Church was not closed down.  At the same time our hearts and prayers went out to St. Wendelin and other Parishes in our Diocese who are forced to close.

Update from the Near West Side Pastoral Plan Team

The Near West Side Pastoral Plan Team met at St. Patrick’s for its first meeting on Thursday, December 3, 2009.  This is the team that has the responsibility for guiding the implementation of the “Pastor Plan: Vision and Strategies” document that was created by the Cluster team as part of the cluster process.  The purpose of this document is to guide the cooperative efforts of both parishes as they minister to the people in their parishes and to the people of the Near West Side.  The Vision Statement reiterates this purpose: “As a Catholic community of Faith on the near west side of Cleveland, we are called to worship god, to nurture our faith, and express our discipleship by the way we love and serve others.”

At the first meeting the group initially spent time getting to know the members of the team.  Each parish has seven members; three of the members from each parish were also members of the original cluster team.  Secondly, the group discussed the purpose and responsibilities of the group.  The group did this by reviewing Bishop Lennon’s March letter that states his recommendations for the parishes in this cluster.  In addition, the group did a preliminary review of the plan and explored how it was written and shared.  Finally, the group talked about the need to have some leadership structure for the team.  This will be determined at the next meeting.  As with the cluster team process, an update will be shared with members of the parishes following each team meeting.

The second meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 7, 2010.  The purpose of that meeting will be to better understand the services provided by both St. Malachi and St. Patrick parishes.  The group will also begin to discuss the needs that will have to be addressed once St. Wendelin’s parish closes in May, 2010.  The group will also begin to discuss in more details the key topics and goals found in the Pastoral Plan.  The group will also need to arrive at a direction for guiding the implementation of the plan.

Announcement from Mass December 12/13 2009

All liturgical ministers – ushers, servers, Eucharistic ministers, greeters, lectors, Cantors, musicians, choir members are asked to pick up & respond to a scheduling questionnaire. If you are not currently active as a liturgical minister but would like to be involved, please also pick up a questionnaire at the church doors.

Next Sunday, we will be decorating the church for Christmas after the 12:30 Mass.

Boxes of collection envelopes for 2010 are available at the church doors. We ask that you write your name on the envelopes when you first begin to use them so we can record donations properly. For more information, please see the announcement in today’s bulletin.
